Cruel Series by K.A. Linde

I just knew it was going to wreck me. I got introduced to K.A. Linde by picking up an ARC of The Lying Season, and that was the best damn decision I have made in a long time. The Seasons Series is by far one of my favorites of 2020! Which is why I had to pick up this series where you first meet the main characters as side characters to Penn and Natalie’s story! It’s always fun getting glimpses of characters you already know, although I usually like to meet them and then get their stories. That being said, I still really enjoyed a deeper glimpse into Crew and more backstory for Lark, Court, and Kathrine. Dear lord, I cannot wait for The Breaking Season where we finally get more about Katherine and Camden because they are a hot mess. Anyway, I loved the first book in this series the most and for me it solidified me on team Penn and Natalie!

Prequel Novella

Release Date: January 7, 2019

SYNOPSIS: I spot the mysterious stranger across the party. I’d seen him in the park, writing furiously in his worn leather notebook. He’s pure confidence, born and bred in high society with eyes like a hawk—observant, cunning, and wicked. With sensual lips and a body made to worship, he’s exquisite. A work of art. While I’m young, innocent, and completely out of my depth. But I’m drawn to him. Captivated by his approach. When he asks for one night, I have only one word for him. Yes. One summer in Paris. One night with him. One cruel night.

Release Date: January 22, 2019

SYNOPSIS: She was supposed to be a one night stand. A way to sate my sexual appetite. I let her glimpse the man I am. The face that I hide behind my carefully cultivated life. But she ripped open that divide—and there’s no going back.

Now, she’s here. In my city. I don’t care that I’m Manhattan royalty and she’s the help. Only that she’s living in my summer home. With me. And I want more.

REVIEW: Okay, so I had some prior knowledge about some of the characters in this book because I started with the Seasons Series which meant I was cringing with some of the interactions between Natalie and the Crew right from the start. I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop and the anticipation almost killed me. I was sucked right in and loved/hated every moment in the best way. There is a reason cruel is part of the title, and it kept me on the edge of my seat. Even with having an idea where it was going, this book just kept me enthralled the entire time. I fell in love with Natalie and Penn! I actually really dislike when a couple’s story is a trilogy because I’m impatient and want my HEA by the end of book 1, but Natalie and Penn are so worth it. Plus, where the author leaves off at the end made me wonder how these two would find each other again. Don’t worry, I obviously stayed up all night so I could get through book 2 and start book 3! Haha. Obviously I’d recommend this book!

I was also a Philosophy major in undergrad, so I loved Penn as a Philosophy professor and his obsession with ethics that is obviously a product of growing up in a world where money was everything. Here’s a little taste:

“It’s a Greek term for happiness or well-being. It’s more accurately translated as human flourishing or prosperity. In ethics, we use it to describe Aristotle’s idea about how ethics contributes to happiness and that the goal in life is to reach eudaimonia.”

“See, for some people, the past is a dark place. It’s everything you knew you shouldn’t be but were anyway. Until you find a way to achieve happiness and then abandon your past. To achieve a happier, more fulfilled life.”

SYNOPSIS: I finally have everything I ever wanted–fame and fortune and literary success. Only one problem: I lost my muse. He was tall, dark, and handsome. Broody, enigmatic, alluring, and right for me in every way. Until he wasn’t. Until I lost everything. And I can’t lose it all again. I’ll do anything to keep it.

Even seeing him again…

REVIEW: I’m going to be completely honest and say I had to skim parts of this book, BUT it is not because it was bad. I just hated what was happening. I knew in my gut how wrong it was going to go, even if I didn’t know exactly how it would happen. Plus, I’m not a huge fan of the whole love triangle thing. At the same time, I needed to know what happened. I needed to experience it with Natalie. Honestly, I got bad vibes from her love interest in this one during book 1, and it only got worse as this story progressed. I was just loyal to Natalie and Penn being together from book 1, so there was no way I could be won over. I seriously couldn’t even read the sexy scenes, because I was so angry. While Penn has definitely made mistakes, I feel like we really got to see why he was redeemable in this one. This book pretty much tore my heart out and I hated it as much as I couldn’t put it down.

Release Date: June 16, 2019

SYNOPSIS: Darkness swept in.

Smothering everything in its inky black.

I have turned into their worst nightmares.

And I will not rest until they pay.

For everything.

REVIEW: FINALLY. God, Penn just keeps proving himself, time and time again. I knew Natalie was on a dark path, but I didn’t know how far down it she would travel. I think the actions of Penn and Natalie in this book are a journey they needed to go on in order to ever be together. I felt the same love/hate relationship to this story all the way through that I have the whole time. I think this is what I love about K.A. Linde’s writing. She can make me feel a whole spectrum of emotions towards the characters, yet I’m utterly enthralled and can’t put the book down. I think this was a great end to the trilogy and I’m so happy I took the time to read these books. If you need me, I will now be exploring all of K.A. Linde’s backlist!

Also, on a side note. We got a glimpse of Katherine that was desperately needed, especially while reading the Seasons Series. I sincerely cannot wait to get into her head and see what happened with her and Camden. There is a lot of pain in that relationship, but I can’t help rooting for them. I know their journey is going to tear my heart out in a whole new way, yet I’ll love every second of it.
