The Substitute by Mickey Miller

4 STARS!

Release Date: January 14, 2019

Synopsis:

When the NFL goes on strike, Super Bowl champion Peyton O’Rourke ends up back in his hometown as a substitute teacher and high school football coach.
The one thing he didn’t count on?
Fellow elementary school teacher Maddy Cooper being newly single.

She’s the hot girl next door type.

Literally. She’s literally the cute girl who grew up next door to Peyton and his best friend’s (now ex) girl.

And even though he knows he should be with anyone other than Maddy Cooper —

Well you know the drill.

Things are going to get hot. Heavy.

Does Facebook still have an ‘It’s complicated’ button?
Because it’s about to go down.

Review:

This was cute. I felt really bad for Maddy in the beginning, but I also wanted to smack her sometimes, especially near the end. Peyton was a delicious male lead, who I really wanted to smack in the beginning, but grew on me towards the end. But really, I saved all my smacks for Michael, the ex. Funny how that worked out. Overall, the journey with both of these characters was really fun. I’ll definitely be checking out more books from this author.

The (half) Truth by Leddy Harper

4 Stars!

Release Date: February 19, 2019

Publisher: Montlake Romance

Synopsis:

Tatum Alexander is so close to realizing her dream of becoming a sous chef she can taste it, but working at her ex-fiancé’s restaurant with his new girlfriend was never in her career plan. To save face and prove she’s moved on, Tatum cooks up a lie that she’s in a relationship with her best friend’s super hot cousin. There’s just one problem: Jason only recently moved to town, and he has no idea they’re already “dating.”

Jason’s a recovering ladies’ man who shouldn’t be on the menu, but that doesn’t mean he’s immune to Tatum’s quirky charm. Giving her lie a kernel of truth, they decide some no-strings-attached fun between the sheets can’t hurt. But as Tatum’s forced to keep making up stories to cover her original fib, she has a hard time separating what’s real and what’s fake—including her feelings for Jason.

With too many tales spun, Tatum can only watch in horror as her collection of yarns begins to unravel, leaving everyone she cares about feeling betrayed. After so many lies, will it be too late to set the record straight? And more importantly, will she be able to convince Jason there’s truth in their love?

Review:

As a person who hates lies, I thought I might have trouble with this premise, but Tatum’s lie has a hilarious impact. It seems so silly, but snowballs so easily. Which leads me to discuss Tatum. I LOVE HER! She is awkward, and silly, and TOTALLY AMAZING. She is one of my favorite realistic female characters I’ve read in a while. And her lies are just too entertaining because they get so outlandish. Jason was interesting, and likable, but Tatum really made the story for me.

This story also has one of my most favorite things, a great supporting cast of family members. I love that Tatum is already apart of Jason’s family get-togethers before he even enters the picture, and she lives with his cousin. I love that his mom is going through a phase of finding herself, and I love that he just can’t understand it. I just love the family dynamic so much!

Publisher: Montlake Romance

Synopsis:

Relax, reset, and head back up the corporate ladder. There’s just one unexpected step. Devoted single dad Dane Madden knows he hurt Neely in the worst way. He’s got a lot to make up for. And as passionate as their reconnection is, it’s a lot to hope for. Having her back in his arms feels so right. But falling in love all over again with a woman who wants to live a world away is bound to go so wrong.

What’s it going to take for Neely to give him—and Dogwood Lane—just one more chance?

Review:

Dane Madden. DANE MADDEN. That seriously could be my whole review, and not because I stayed up until 3:30am to finish this in one sitting.

Adriana Locke does it again, and by it, I mean wrote an amazing romance story that had me smiling like a fool by the end. First of all, I’m a sucker for a single dad romance. Second, there is a strong and independent female lead. Third, there is an amazing friend group that I’m dying to know more about.

Okay, let’s start with Dane. He is always trying to do the right thing, but tends to mess it up somehow–let’s just say the road to hell is paved with good intentions. His relationship with his daughter is the freakin’ cutest thing ever. Plus, he just has this whole hot-caring-man-ness about him throughout the book that I just love.

Then there is Neely, who has every right to be completely pissed and heartbroken about what happened so long ago. She is strong and chasing a dream despite the heartbreak, and I just admire her for that. Her journey throughout this story is just so relatable for women “doing it all.”

Lastly, while I’m loving all of the friends, Penn is the silly playboy with a heart of gold that I can’t wait to see fall hard. His book, I’m HERE FOR IT!

Long story short, READ THIS BOOK!

Seattle heiress Mackenzie Dupont is treating herself to a single-girl honeymoon in Mexico and a desire to relinquish her innocence to a gorgeous one-night stand. Fake names. True pleasure. But when she wakes up alone, Mackenzie realizes just how much anger is left in her broken heart.

Suffering a tragic personal loss, pro soccer player Slade Rodriguez has his reasons for vanishing without a goodbye. Right or wrong, he’s blaming the beautiful and infuriating stranger he never wants to see again. They’re both in for a shock when Mackenzie shows up as his new personal assistant. And they both have a lot to learn about each other. Because they share more than they could possibly know, including a common enemy who’s playing his own games. And he’s not afraid to get dirty.

Now there’s only one way Mackenzie and Slade can win: to trust in each other and to stop hiding from the lies they’ve told, the secrets they’ve kept, the mistakes they’ve made, and the attraction that still burns between them.

Review:

I LOVED THIS BOOK! I really do enjoy Rachel Van Dyken books, and this one was no different. I was completely invested in where the main characters were going. Mack was kind, but strong and I appreciated that about her. Slade, once he deals with his crap, is caring and hilarious. I love the friendship between Matt and Slade, and the dynamics of Slade and Jagger during their community service. There is a lot going on and I love it all! I’m excited to see where she takes this series, and I hope we see more of Mack and Slade in the future books.

Review:

After reading Dirty Exes, I was excited to get Isla’s story in Dangerous Exes. We get a little bit of Isla’s explosive scene with her ex in the first book, and from just that I wanted more about her! This book did not disappoint. First, Rachel Van Dyken took me not really liking or caring about Jessie, to not only being invested in him, but actually liking and rooting for him. Isla is this brilliant mix of spitfire and caring female. Plus, we meet her Goo-Poh, and that woman is a force unto her own–the humor she brings to the story is amazing! This book just gave me so many feels. I would recommend reading both of the books in this series!

Review:

I loved this book more than the first one in this series! Tara Brown does a wonderful job of weaving in socioeconomic differences in a world of wealth. Her characters are trying to figure themselves out in realistic ways through an array of issues that arise. The fact that the characters aren’t always making the best decisions made me more invested in them. Lacey is such a hard worker, and I really appreciate the female friendship she has with Marcia. I went from wanting shake Jordan, to wanting to hug him. I love the back and forth between Lacey and Jordan too. This was a great read that evoked lots of emotions and made me so happy in the end!

Bluebird by Ann Penny

5 Stars!

41027535.jpg

Review: The beginning of this book was a little slow for me personally, but then all of a sudden I got totally and utterly sucked in. All of the events that propelled the story along kept me utterly enthralled. I read the book in one night, and went through so many emotions. My heart hurt and rejoiced multiple times. I loved the history between Natalie and Luke, and the family bonds between many of the characters.

I’ve read many romances, and it’s wonderful when I find one that can still give me all the feels. I’m thoroughly impressed that this is Ann Penny’s debut! I’d definitely recommend it to my fellow romance readers.

I received an ARC of this book from the author in return for an honest review.
