Always You by Samantha Young

5 STARS

Release Date: April 26, 2022

SYNOPSIS: Arrochar Adair has loved her brother’s ex-bodyguard and best friend, Mac Galbraith, for years. Once upon a time, she was too young for him, but now that she’s a mature woman in her thirties, Arro can see no issue with their difference in age. Yet something deeper, a problem much more difficult to surmount, is keeping them apart. Mac Galbraith remembers clearly the night Arro became everything to him, no longer just his best friend and boss’s younger sister. However, having made many mistakes over the years, there is one mistake Mac is determined not to make: to believe that he is worthy of Arrochar Adair. Allowing them to grow closer during his daughter, Robyn’s, return has proven his undoing. And when Arro forces the subject of their relationship, his response pushes her away. He just never meant for it to destroy them completely. Devastated by Mac’s final rejection, Arro is determined to move on without him in her life, though he seems intent on staying put. And when the Adair family face a new threat, one that may have ties to Mac’s past, Arro can’t seem to be rid of the man. In fact, Mac will do anything to protect her. But with so much hurt between them, will Arro let Mac close enough to guard her from their enemy… before it’s too late?

Always You is Book 3 in the Adair Family Series!

REVIEW: THIS SERIES! I’m absolutely in love with this series. I actually re-read book one, Here With Me, after reading book 2, There With You, just so I could be prepared for this one. I have been dying for Mac and Arro’s story since we caught glimpses of them and their connection in book one. Mac is such a wonderful character. Seeing him rebuild his relationship with Robyn in book one, and his support of Robyn and Reagan in book two, made me really interested in him as a male character. It was great to see his background, and get to know his hangups that were stopping him and Arro from being together. Arro has also been a great character throughout this series, and getting to know her better and seeing her love for Mac was really heartwarming. These two have definitely been on a heartbreaking journey that was rarely easy throughout this whole book, but it made me that much more happy for them at the end. The romantic suspense was a lot in this one, but honestly the relationship between Mac and Arro stole the show! The Adair family just keeps growing, and they’re some of my favorites as they are ridiculously supportive of one another. It’s really the merging of two families so far, which seems weird, but it’s also so amazing. I think that’s one of the things I love about this whole series, that everything’s a little out of the ordinary. There’s the romantic suspense aspect that adds to the storylines, but also the character connections are not normal in the best way.

I’m a little worried for the next book, only because of seeing the two brothers interactions with Eredine. I’m already leaning towards one over the other, and I really hope it works out that way. Can you tell I’m not a love triangle fan? Haha. I’m very interested to see what happens with the rest of the series in general, and I cannot wait to read them!

Falling Embers by Catherine Cowles

5 Stars!

Release Date: April 12, 2022

Synopsis: I’ve loved Calder Cruz from the moment he taught me how to fly. Racing down a mountain and giving me the release I so desperately needed. My understanding. My safe space. Hadley has fought for a life of her own ever since her sister’s kidnapping. When she was drowning in expectations and family pressures, Calder was always the one who understood her. Until one night changed it all. From best friends to strangers in a single breath. She’s like a fire that lives inside me. Even when I thought it was all burned out, there were still embers that lived in my bones. Calder knows what it’s like to almost lose the people he loves most. He’ll never make that kind of mistake again. Working at the fire station and taking care of his daughters are the only things he needs. All it takes is a single moment to make him realize how wrong he is. A split second of coming close to losing the woman he has always loved. But as long-buried embers light anew, there are those who lurk in the shadows. And they’ll do whatever it takes to extinguish that flame for good…

Review: This book, so many feelings!! After reading book one, Tattered Stars, which I absolutely adored, I was so excited for book 2. I had high hopes, especially with the little glimpses we get of Hadley and Calder in book 1, and this book was everything I wanted it to be! There was the romantic suspense angle that was intense and kept me invested in the overall story until the very end. Then there was Hadley and Calder themselves, with so much to unpack with both of these characters individually and together. I loved their backstories so much. I also enjoyed seeing everything play out and how these two worked together. Honestly, the range of emotions I felt during this book just reminded me that Catherine Cowles does not disappoint when it comes to steamy, romantic suspense that will break your heart, but stitch it right back up again. I sincerely cannot wait to see what happens in the rest of this series, because I know I’m going to love every emotional moment!!

Leaving her defenseless and broken.
Such a pretty little Raven,
Your screams will fill the night air,
And when your heart stops beating,
The world will no longer be in despair.

REVIEW: This was my first book by this author, and I really enjoyed parts of this book. The sex positivity was refreshing, even if it took Jax a while to get there. I think Jax’s struggles in the beginning of their relationship–that are alluded to and mentioned, because the book starts 5 years after they broke off a 10 year relationship–are very realistic. Unfortunately, he lashed out at Raven with his own insecurities and upbringing. As I learned about how far he has come and all the work he has done on himself, it made me really appreciate him as he currently was. The current Jax is definite book boyfriend material. Raven is a strong, successful female character. She knows what she likes and wants, and isn’t willing to compromise that! Their chemistry is off the charts as well. The author does a good job describing realistic parts of sexual encounters that romance books often leave out, which I sincerely appreciated. Plus, there is a stalker/murder on the loose that is targeting Raven. All of this is the perfect recipe for an amazing book!

There are a lot of layers to this story and messy parts. When it comes to the murder, some evidence is not handled very well by a couple people, and I wanted to smack them both. One of my personal no-go’s that makes me DNF a book happens around half way through, which really sucked, because I was enjoying it so much prior to that moment. You can find full spoilers below. Anyway, it’s a twisted ride and I think many readers will enjoy this book.

Spoiler Warning!

You are about to read a spoiler.
These details may also trigger some people,
so please proceed with that caution.

I recommend going in blind to this one, but I want to share my thoughts on what completely killed my interest. It was a combination of things, with one big thing that resulted in me losing my interest in the female character.

Let’s start with the romantic suspense part. Jax is an ex-detective. His ex-partner, Cruz, who he has known since high school hates Raven with a passion. Of course, he is the lead detective on the murder that takes place in her club. This right here has some potential, but a couple things happened that made it not feel real to me. Raven is totally traumatized by the fact that someone was murdered in her club and she sees the dead body. Cruz is a complete ass to her in the aftermath, going as far as to harass and blame her during questioning, when there is proof she was no where near the person killed when everything happened. Not only that, but he receives two notes that threaten Raven around the beginning of the investigation, and he doesn’t tell his partner or chief about them, even though Raven brought up that she has been receiving weird gifts for years now from someone anonymous. Plus, the chief knows that Cruz hates Raven, but she keeps him on the case? All of this just frustrated me.

Needless to say that I was already frustrated by the aforementioned, so that when I got to a part that included a big no-go for me, I was just done. Raven is alone in the club after what went down (also not smart), and she gets a note that is semi-threatening, as well as seems to be written by her ex-girlfriend she dated after breaking up with Jax. A note she does not mention to anyone. The issue with this is that Raven loved her ex-girlfriend, but it wasn’t working so she broke it off, and said ex-girlfriend lost it and then killed herself. Raven found her. Then her assistant comes in and scares the crap out of her. Raven sees the ex-girlfriend in the assistant, who is now all up in her space. The assistant pulls Raven’s hand to cup between her legs. Raven still feels reminded of her ex-girlfriend ends up fingering her assistant. This is where I was just done. This whole scene in and of itself it not completely horrible, until you take in the fact that Jax has been working on himself and his hangups around group sex in order to be with Raven. He has been coming to her club for a year and not hooking up with anyone else, just watching, getting comfortable, and learning how to accept his desires, so he can make it work with Raven. Before the murder, she pulls him into a group scene that he wouldn’t have participated in before, and he goes all in. He continually tells her he’s all in, and that he wants to be with her. They go home together and sleep together multiple times. And how does she repay all of his hard work, by fingering her assistant while thinking about her ex-girlfriend the first time she is away from him?! I lost it. Honestly, I stopped liking her right there. This is obviously a personal preference, and I’m sure some readers won’t think too much of this whole scene. Raven is honest with Jax about it after the fact, but I don’t think that fixes it.

Another thing that bothers me about this whole, messing around with the assistant thing, is that it’s crossing boundaries and it makes it seem like people who like to share their partner, cannot be faithful to their partner. There is a difference between an open relationship and a relationship where the couple likes to share as a kink. In my mind there is a difference between you and your partner having a kink together, versus you hooking up with other people without them there. And not just anyone, but the person you work most closely to every day. As you can tell, this just completely ruined it for me. I wish it didn’t, but it did.

Release Date: February 1, 2022

Synopsis: Be brave. Just for sixty seconds. Twenty breaths. One night changed them both forever. Their lives shattered, beyond repair, with jagged edges and pieces askew. Now, Everly has a chance to make things right. To bring healing to the place where everything fell apart. But it means facing the family her father almost destroyed, and the boy with the dark eyes—now grown—who still haunts her dreams. Just one breath away from having your life ripped out from under you. The last thing Hayes wants is another reminder of all the ways he failed sixteen years ago. When Everly drives back into Wolf Gap, his only mission is to get her to leave. For his family’s sake, and for his own, those demons need to stay buried for good. But everything about this woman is a surprise, from her spine of steel to the sanctuary she hopes to create with the land her mother left behind. And Hayes is powerless to stay away. As a careful friendship sparks into something more, someone watches. And they’ll do anything to tear it all apart…

Review: I just love Catherine Cowles books!! This book was the perfect beginning to a new series, and I cannot wait to find out what happens to all of the characters that we met in this one. I’m so invested in Hayes’ family! I definitely teared up a little bit here and there with the trauma that some of the characters went through, but also happy tears for all the caring and depth they showed each other in moments that were very difficult. I loved Everly’s strength and growth. She was so caring and wonderful despite everything that happened to her. The Hayes and Everly not so meet cute as adults was the perfect start to an hate to love story, and I enjoyed Hayes’ growth after that! Even the growth in their relationship was wonderful. I liked the interactions between all the characters! There was a lot going on with the suspense part, but not an overwhelming amount. Catherine Cowles is a queen of romantic suspense and that’s why she’s become an auto-buy author for me. She does such a good job at weaving a story that’s layered with characters that have emotional depth and ties to the people around them that make you so invested in the whole group of characters. There’s no way I won’t keep going with reading the series. In other words, I absolutely love this book and it was exactly what I needed after reading some not so great books. I sincerely cannot wait for Falling Embers. Seeing how Hadley overcomes her struggles around relationships, and the very apparent sparks we see in this one. I’m also looking forward to seeing the twins more, and how they play into the story as well. This series has so much potential with the characters that were introduced in this first book!

Juniper Hill by Devney Perry

5 STARS

Release Date: January 11, 2022

SYNOPSIS: Memphis Ward arrives in Quincy, Montana, on the fifth worst day of her life. She needs a shower. She needs a snack. She needs some sanity. Because moving across the country with her newborn baby is by far the craziest thing she’s ever done.
But maybe it takes a little crazy to build a good life. If putting the past behind her requires a thousand miles and a new town, she’ll do it if it means a better future for her son. Even if it requires setting aside the glamour of her former life. Even if it requires working as a housekeeper at The Eloise Inn and living in an apartment above a garage.
It’s there, on the fifth worst day of her life, that she meets the handsomest man she’s ever laid eyes on. Knox Eden is a beautiful, sinful dream, a chef and her temporary landlord. With his sharp, stubbled jaw and tattooed arms, he’s raw and rugged and everything she’s never had–and never will. Because after the first worst day of her life, Memphis learned a good life requires giving up on her dreams too. And a man like Knox Eden will only ever be a dream.

Juniper Hill is Book 2 in the new small town family series: The Edens!

REVIEW: This story was just super sweet with a dash of suspense and drama. I liked Knox and Memphis a lot as characters. It was so fun seeing them get to know each other and try to resist each other. Knox is definitely a book boyfriend–tattoos, hot, driven, and family oriented. Memphis was a ridiculously strong female character, and I really enjoyed that about her. Everything she gave up and went through to get to this point, was really inspiring. I also loved how Knox dealt with her insecurities throughout the journey they were on. While I was definitely waiting for the drama to happen, it was interesting to see how it all played out! Devney Perry never disappoints. I always feel like I get a great romance, a great plot, and it ends up exactly how it should. Of course I’m really excited for Garnet Flats, especially with the little snippet we get at the end of this book!

After meeting each Eden sibling in Indigo Ridge, but not learning a whole lot, I was so ready for all the books in this series. I’m so fascinated by them, and cannot wait to see what happens to each of them in this series. Not to mention these covers?! Yes, I most definitely purchased the paperbacks!!
